Passing of Dr Geoffrey Vaughan AO
By Dr Tony Peacock FTSE
Former Chairman of the CRC Committee and Distinguished Friend of the CRC Association, Dr Geoffrey Vaughan passed away last Thursday.
The CRC Community are in Geoff’s debt for his enthusiasm, vision and commitment to the CRC Program. He championed the program to Ministers and worked with the public service to make the program an exemplar of how to get industry and academia to work together. His commitment to formal reviewing of CRCs to meet or exceed expectations was vital to the credibility of the program.
Geoff’s sense of humour was legend. His regular Annual Report Awards at the CRCA conference were worth the price of admission alone. I still recall awards for the “Most photos of a CEO in an Annual Report” (won two years in a row by one particular CEO), his smearing his face with “Rocket Science” a new skin product from the Tissues Growth and Repair CRC and it took years for the Department of Industry to live down that they put out a promotional ruler for the CRC Program with only inches as the measure!
His questioning at conferences and in CRC visits was always probing but delivered with great respect. He was inspirational at the Melbourne Business School courses for senior postgrads and postdocs.
Geoff had many other careers besides his CRC career. Researcher, Churchill Fellow, Dean, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, CEO and Wallaby. He was a great family man and the CRC community was very familiar with his wife Jennie who attended many CRCA conferences and took great interest in individuals and projects. Jennie passed away in 2014.
I am sure I speak for the whole CRC Community in passing on our condolences to Geoff’s children and grandchildren. His contribution was enormous and we are very grateful.
A celebration of Geoffrey Vaughan’s life will be held tomorrow, Wednesday 10 January at the RACV Club – level 17, 501 Bourke Street in Melbourne from 3.00pm.
